TNA: Wrestling Done Properly
By: TWF Dave | Posted: 07/10/12

This past Sunday night TNA Wrestling reached the pinicle so far of their rise to being a comprehensive, well written show. This isn't a review of Destination X so, in as few words as possible, it was a good show with a match of the year contender in AJ Styles vs Daniels and an unexpected World Heavyweight Title change. No, instead I wanted to highlight to examples of how far TNAs booking and story telling has advanced in the post Russo era.

To me, TNAs storylines now have the same substance as any well written TV show or comic book. Storys have a begining, middle and end and most importantly of all, characters interactions with each other are now remembered and brought to the forfront instead of being forgotten about three months down the line.

Here are two examples from this past Sundays Destination X.

1. Jesse Sorenson
Several months ago Jesse Sorensen recieved a C-1 vertebrae fracture with spinal cord edema at the hands (knees) of Zima Ion. For a couple of weeks TNA kept us updated on his condition and then slowly let him slip onto the back burner. Podcasts and blogs were happy to criticise TNA for this but this past Sunday they responded in the best way possible. At Destination X, an X-Division PPV, TNA updated us on the condition of this X-Division competitor, first of all with a vignette and then by having the once again mobile Sorenson come down to the ring and cut a promo. The crowd responded well both to his unexpected return and his apparant well being.

The promo was well written and essentially stated that Jesse hoped that Zima Ion would win the vacant title so that he (Sorenson) could then take it from him. After the segment was over, as Jesse was leaving to walk back up the ramp, Ion made his way down to the ring for his match leading to a brief staredown between the two as Ion mocked Sorensons neck injury and Jeremy Borash informing us that this was the first contact between the two since Ion broke his neck.

This is good simple writing 101. TNA have taken a negative in Sorensons career threatening injury and turned it into a positive. Now, upon his return proper, Sorenson will have a story to his character, he'll be the returning hero with a score to settle rather than a random guy that carrys a football. By placing the title on Ion TNA have fulfilled one half of Sorensons wish list already, left the fans anticipating his return and created a hook for Ions' title reign too.

The Greatest Man That Ever Held the World Title....

2. Austin Aries
A Double has been on fire in recent months. In fact, that fire has been slowly buiding since his return to TNA one year ago and it's part of the reason that recent months TNA programming has been so compelling. Given that we've been told countless times that TNA have a long term booking plan that lasts until Bound for Glory and is supposed to be building towards a Bobby Roode vs James Storm World Title match, most people dismissed Aries as just another guy for Roode to beat on the path to Bound for Glory. They were wrong to do so. Whether this was part of that long term plan all along or not (which is doubtful), TNA have listened to the fans and placed the World Title around the waist of their hottest commodity.

Aries was perfectly placed as the X-Division champion to get himself over, this wasn't a cert given his TNA history but anybody that has seen him in Ring of Honor knew that he was more than capable of doing so. After The Greatest Man That Ever Lived did just that the ball was firmly in TNAs court to write him into the main event scene. They did it elegantly and intellegently - by giving Aries the opportunity to relinquish the World X-Division Championship in exchange for a World Title match at Destination X. Aries' "option C" (The X-Division Champion will always be given this opportunity at Destination X) was a masterstroke in not only cementing Aries importance to the history of the division, but also placing even more importance on the title itself. In the couple of weeks following Aries and Roode would face off in the ring on television with both belts present and feeling like the prestigious titles that they are rather than pretty decorative belts that mean nothing (I'm looking at you here United States Championship!).

TNA then cemented their solid booking and storytelling and confirmed that they are willing to respond to the fans reactions (like the bookers of old) by having Aries take the title from the longest reigning TNA Champion in history.

In summery, since Vince Russo left TNA have created a long term booking plan which features stories that follow the classic three act narrative including the all important ending AND just have importantly have showed the ultimate willingness to build new stars based on the fans reactions by placing their World Heavyweight Championship on Austin Aries. They've done this in a TV show that features the likes of AJ Styles, Christopher Daniles and Samoa Joe plying their trade each week among other "pure" wrestling standouts.

Are you watching TNA? Because you really should be.

Austin Aries title win by TH

Sunday night proved a lot of things. First, it proved that the cream does rise to the top. Second, it proved that maybe being vegetarian/Vegan in pro wrestling is advantageous. Third, it proved that bridges in wrestling are mostly made of asbestos or some other non-carcinogenic flame retardant material.

Yes, Austin Healy Aries, the greatest man who ever lived, left TNA/Impact twice on bad terms, but when he went back a third time when they got a new creative team and a new focus on being different, it was the formula for magic. Aries did everything he could to create a new aura around the X-Division Championship, and at the event where he "won" his Impact contract last year, he took home the biggest prize in his company.

A Double is a huge part of why Impact has turned the corner. Credit has to go to his opponent last night, Robert Roode, who has been the Champion that Impact has needed and deserved for the last nine months. It has to go to James Storm, Bully Ray, Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe, Magnus, AJ Styles, Joseph Park and probably a bit to Kurt Angle as well (Who has done well to share the spotlight instead of hogging it) too. But Aries has been the biggest star performer out of all of them. Last night, he got his due.
