Title: Thoughts Of a Crazy Person: CM Punk
Date: 09/13/11

June 26th, 2011. Monday Night RAW sees the return of the RAW Roulette. John Cena gets put through a table by his opponent on the night, R-Truth costing him his match. Post match, CM Punk, stood on the stage goes off on a shoot style tirade the likes of which haven't been seen since Joey Styles did the same a few years ago. He announced that come the Money in the Bank pay per view, he would take the WWE Championship from John Cena, and then an hour after the show went off the air, his contract would expire and he would be leaving the company with the WWE Championship, something nobody has ever done.

WWE then run an angle which sees CM Punk "fired" and him losing his title shot, then John Cena confronting Vince McMahon threatening to leave should Punk not be reinstated and given his title match back. Vince then said should Cena lose, he'd be "fired" (we'll come to this later).

So, Money in the Bank rolls around and CM Punk manages to find a way to pull something special out of John Cena, he pulled out a very good match from SUPERCENA™ and wins the WWE championship. Vince then signals for the RAW Money in the Bank winner, Alberto Del Rio down to the ring to cash in his title shot, Punk dispatches him and leaves through the crowd. This was superbly done. CM Punk did what he said he would do, and then teased the WWE on Twitter:

Monday Night RAW rolls around, Vince tries to fire SUPERCENA™ and all of a sudden is replaced by Triple H, who is apparently the new COO. He then announces a tournament which sees Rey Mysterio defeat The Miz to win the new WWE Championship, only to lose it to SUPERCENA™ later the same night. This is where WWE really screwed the pooch. "Cult of Personality" plays out in the arena which leads to CM Punk walking out onto the stage with his belt, basically setting up SUPERCENA™ vs CM Punk II at Summerslam. They have a decent match, nowhere near as good as it was at Money in the Bank, but we get Kevin Nash interference post match, and then Alberto Del Rio running down and winning the belt.

This is where WWE screwed the pooch. CM Punk was quickly becoming the top heel in the WWE, then he is stuck in a program with Triple H (although he is a superior replacement for Kevin Nash), how many people has Triple H really put over in the last 3 years? Punk managed to embarrass Kevin Nash on the mic, the only reason I could see WWE bringing him back in, (he's done in the ring) and he was getting a better reaction. So, WWE have taken one of the best, pure heels the company has had in years and basically screwed themselves, now the top RAW heels are Alberto Del Rio, The Miz and R-Truth, talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel (ADR aside).

I still wonder, with WWE looking towards SUPERCENA™ vs The Rock, why did WWE see the need to put CM Punk back on television so soon after him leaving the company since he hasn't really done anything since dropping the title to Alberto. What are your thoughts? Did WWE bring him back to soon? Did you agree with what they did? Where do you see him going? Head on over to the forums and let us know.

On a side note, I'll be doing a new column for TWF starting this week with a review of No Surrender, and going each week for iMPACT Wrestling and TNA pay per views. I'm looking for name recommendations for this new blog so feel free to send me your ideas.
