X-Blog #0096: Future Endeavored - Serena Deeb
By Derek X
WWE wasted little time announcing Serena's release just moments after her final appearance on this Friday Night's Smackdown. Earlier in the week it was reported that Serena was released due to her 'not "living out" her Straight Edge Society persona in public.' If that is the reason why Serena was released, then this is complete bullshit.
While women, in general, have to deal with double standards in daily life as it is already, it seems WWE holds the divas to different standards than guys. If Serena's release was due to her breaking kayfabe, well many are accountable. Just recently, The Undertaker and Michelle McCool were married while Undertaker was supposed to be in a coma. There was some backlash that came from the photos being released online, but that was all. You'd think if breaking kayfabe was such a sin, then given the amount of time and effort being put into the coma storyline, there would be some disciplinary action for Taker. Yet there was none. It doesn't end there. Kane, who is marketed as a scarred, scary monster is actually really smart. He publishes a political blog during his downtime. Yet, no disciplinary actions have resulted from this either.
Backstory:
Serena Deeb debuted on Smackdown in the most auspicious of fashions. She joined CM Punk's Straight Edge Society and subsequently got her head shaved bald upon entrance into the SES. Serena would go on to accompany Punk and Luke Gallows as the Straight Edge Society grew and moved on. Her first televised match came in a Mixed tag with Luke Gallows against Big Show and Kelly Kelly, where Serena gained her only win via pinfall. Only a week later, rumors of her release were reported and then confirmed.
Why she was released:
I pretty much covered this part earlier, but I have more to add. I strongly doubt anyone in the SES, except for Punk - since it's truly his lifestyle, actually refrains from smoking or drinking. In fact, I'm sure most WWE wrestlers partake in the drink and nothing gets made of it. I guess, according to WWE logic, if Serena wanted to drink or smoke, she should do it alone. Last I checked, drinking alone is what makes you an alcoholic. Then maybe after she becomes an alcoholic, WWE could release her guilt-free and Linda McMahon can say she met her once or twice.
Who is at loss:
Honestly, I think it's WWE's loss here. You won't find many divas, or many women at all, willing to shave bald for a job. Serena and Molly Holly were a select few. I can't imagine another diva currently on WWE's roster who would be willing to do such a thing. And it's ironic that her release coincides with Luna Vachon's death because Luna was one of the few divas who put the company and her kayfabe persona over her looks. It's also telling that just recently police found that prescription medication was involved in Luna's death. WWE is sending a horrible message to their talent by releasing Serena under these circumstances.
What the future holds:
Upon further research, I found out that Serena is only 24 years old. And at her young age, she's already wrestled in the indies along the likes of MsChif and she now has national exposure on WWE television. I think if she returns to the indies, she'll be booked to great extents and should enjoy a decent career from here on out.
