X-Blog #0092: The KJR (RAW 8/23/10)
By Derek X
We're not supposed to know that this episode(?) of RAW was taped last week directly following last week's episode. We're not supposed to know this even though it's in the same venue as last week. We're not supposed to realize that Joe Manganiello, the six foot seven gentleman standing behind Micheal Cole who was recognized last week on camera is STILL THERE, wearing the same clothes as a week before. (By the way, Joe Manganiello stars on True Blood, which is one of my top five current cable shows. If you're not watching it, you should be. It's like Twilight... for heterosexuals)
WHAT I LIKED:
The Little Things: Sometimes the little things that can be so easily overlooked make the biggest differences. I noticed that Miz's briefcase still has a Daniel Bryan sized dent on it. How easy would it have been to get another briefcase for Miz to hold? I like that the dent was still there, even though it wasn't referenced on camera. That was either really good thinking or simple laziness on the behalf of WWE. I felt like that was an easter egg just for me. Another little thing I liked was Sheamus calling a little girl, "Fella!" That was priceless.
The Miz vs Cena: I give Cena a lot of crap. I mean a lot of crap. A lot... of crap. I know I do, but when he does something deserving of criticism it's my journalistic duty to call him out on it. In that same honor, when he does something worthy of credit I must bestow that on him as well, regardless of how begrudging it is. Cena gave Darren Young a lot of offense before giving him the boot out of the WWE. This week, he did the same for The Miz. The offense part, not the boot. Because of this, the two of them had an excellent match tonight. That might have been the best and most evenly-contested match I've seen Cena have recently. Why can't that happen more often? I know Cena can wrestle. So let him.
Nexus, or lack thereof: Nexus has been running rampant for a while now. It's nice to see an episode of RAW that was not overrun with them. After last week, I think we all could use a break from the theme music. I like that Wade Barrett is in the Six-Pack Challenge at Night of Champions. I feel like in the small amount of time that he's been in the WWE, he's made a big impact. And I, for one, don't feel like he's out of place with the other main eventers.
WHAT I HATED:
DQ?: That's not what you said last week. Or more appropriately, EARLIER THAT VERY DAY. How confused the live audience must have been when disqualification isn't called when Sheamus interfered in the Orton/Gabriel match, but it is called Daniel Bryan interfered in the Miz/Cena match. I don't understand the reason why the match rules, of all things, cannot be consistent. Either interference leads to disqualification or it doesn't. Don't mold the rules to fit the storylines, mold the storylines to fit the rules. It's pure indolence on behalf of the WWE. There's no reason to even have referees if they aren't going to uphold the rules.
Sheamus: Are you freaking kidding me? Zack Ryder? I suppose at least I should be happy it wasn't Evan Bourne, but still... Sheamus is a two-time WWE Champion now. He's a huge, tough irishman. He's even pushed that way. But not when he's champion for some reason. When he's champion, he becomes a weak punk who can only win championship matches by DQ or some other manufactured victory. Unless, of course, said championship match is against Bourne, Ryder or any other jobber. I said last week that it's time to take the training wheels off. Now, I say it's time to put some monster wheels on. Turn Sheamus into the monster heel I know he can be. Give him a championship reign bent on destruction and mayhem, not trickery and deceit. No one is ever going to take him seriously otherwise.
Micheal Cole: What began as novel and neat, is now becoming annoying. Micheal Cole is a play by play announcer. He cannot play the heel role. Leave that to JBL and Matt Striker, who know what they're doing. I've had enough of Cole disparaging Daniel Bryan, especially when he starts commending The Miz. Tonight's Miz/Cena match had Cole tied in knots. He didn't know whether to root for Cena or for Miz. I'm tired of him berating Brian for being a standout in the 'indies.' I know I'm not supposed to know this, but everyone starts out in the independent circuit. And if you aren't a standout in the indies, WWE won't come calling.
Since I started out by hocking a television show I like, I'll end the same way. Watch Warehouse 13 tomorrow night if you already don't. I could care less that Cody Rhodes is guest starring. It's another of my favorite cable television shows.
